The bond is the material that holds diamond abrasive grains together in a grinding wheel. Far from being a simple "glue", the bond system determines how the wheel behaves on the working surface, directly influencing self-sharpening behavior, wear resistance, dressing characteristics and chip clearance. Selecting the right bond is therefore just as important as selecting the right diamond grit.
Resin-bonded diamond wheels are known for their good self-sharpening properties and low grinding force. The bond wears at a controlled rate, continuously exposing fresh, sharp diamond grains. This makes resin bonds an excellent choice for applications where surface quality and low heat generation are priorities.
Metal-bonded wheels offer the highest wear resistance and strongest grain retention of the three types. They hold the diamond grit extremely firmly and maintain wheel geometry for a long time, which is ideal for high stock removal and demanding production environments. However, they require proper dressing to keep the wheel sharp.
Vitrified-bonded diamond wheels combine good grain retention with a porous, open structure that provides excellent chip clearance and coolant flow. They offer a balanced performance profile with adjustable porosity, making them popular for precision and high-efficiency grinding applications.
It is a common misconception that one bond type suits all wheels processing the same workpiece material. In reality, resin, metal and vitrified bonds each have distinct usage characteristics, and the optimum choice changes with the specific operation. The same material may be ground best with a resin bond in one process and a metal bond in another, depending on the priorities of that operation.

If an existing wheel has become "wear-resistant but increasingly dull", the bond may be too hard for the application, preventing fresh diamond grains from being exposed. Conversely, if the wheel "cuts quickly but the working layer wears away too fast", the bond may be too soft or the wheel may lack sufficient grain retention for the load applied. In both cases, the bond condition is a valuable diagnostic direction when optimizing the grinding process.
The bond is the backbone of a diamond grinding wheel's working performance. There is no universal bond type: the right choice depends on the workpiece material, the process stage, contact area, efficiency targets, profile retention needs, spindle speed and dressing constraints. By evaluating these factors and reading the wear behavior of the current wheel, you can select the bond that delivers the best balance of sharpness, life and productivity.
